short history lesson

a short history lesson on textiles...

since im using textiles and sewing for this brief too,
i thought i'd look briefly into the history of how and
where certain fabrics came from..
Spinning wheel
because we all had big machines to make fabric, these
were some of the methods they had to use:
  • Drop spindle
  • hand to hand spinning
  • rolling on the thigh
  • weaving
  • knitting
  • crocheting
  • knotting
most of these methods originate from egypt and india,
where most common fabrics originated from
medieval fabrics
silk was first made by china using silkworms, but eventually became
used worldwide.
egypt had a large fabric production using plants and natural dye,
which was also used by India around the same time.

chinese silk
not only was fabric used for clothing, but also tapestries,
bags, homes, blankets, eventually being used for more modern
purposes such as furniture, towels, kites, parachutes and
millions of other items.
